My creative process

My creative process is constantly evolving, shaped by daily experiences and inspirations. Each piece I create is part of my journey, drawing from personal memories and the landscapes that captivate me.

I often start in my sketchbook, where I freely explore ideas through quick pencil sketches or delicate watercolours. This is where I capture fleeting impressions, experimenting with transparency and layering. The fluidity of watercolour allows me to express initial thoughts before committing to a larger piece. It’s a way of mapping out ideas and capturing the essence of a moment.

Painting landscapes en plein air is one of the most fulfilling aspects of my practice. Being outdoors, immersed in nature, allows me to engage directly with the environment. In Cornwall, where I often paint, the light is constantly shifting, demanding a quick and responsive approach. I find this challenge exhilarating, as it pushes me to capture the atmosphere and spontaneity of the moment.

painting in the open air

Much of my work is influenced by memories, especially those tied to my Anglo-Irish heritage. Themes from this cultural background naturally find their way into my art, influencing my choice of colours and textures. I’m drawn to the stories and experiences of past generations, and I try to weave these elements into my paintings. Subtle symbols or specific colour palettes often reflect a personal connection to a place or memory, evoking a sense of identity and belonging.

Continuous learning is an essential part of my practice. I attend a weekly local art class and am currently enrolled in a year-long program at Newlyn School of Art. These environments offer valuable opportunities to experiment with new techniques and share ideas with other artists. The sense of community and exchange is invigorating, and it constantly inspires me to push the boundaries of my work.

Art is also a deeply healing process for me. It provides a way to express emotions that are hard to articulate in words, helping me reflect and find solace. Whether it’s a large oil painting or a small watercolour, each brushstroke is part of a meditative journey that grounds me in the present. Sharing my work has also connected me with people worldwide, leading to meaningful conversations and friendships that enrich life.

In every piece, whether born from a sketchbook or painted in the open air, I try to capture the essence of my experiences. This ongoing exploration keeps me painting, always seeking to convey the beauty and complexity of the world around me and within me.
